Cinema Retro has received the following press release from Acorn Media in the UK
THE RUSTLE of sagebrush on the prairie: pounding cattle hooves and rifle-shot echo. In a
time when the West was still wild, a man came to Medicine Bow, Wyoming and they called
him The Virginian.
The Virginian is one of television’s most iconic Westerns, with its feature length, actionpacked
episodes, each like a film in itself. The Virginian: The Compete Series One will
be released as a bumper 11-disc set featuring all 30 episodes and a bonus disc on 4 April
2011 courtesy of Acorn Media.
Tackling rustlers, land-grabbers, escaped convicts, conmen, corrupt railroaders and
various other villains, The Virginian was fair-minded, fast-drawing and not afraid to stand
up for his friends in a place where a disagreement could mean sudden death.
Based on Owen Wister’s great novel on the American West the series was filmed entirely
in colour. It first aired in America in 1962 and on BBC TV in 1967. Featuring an
outstanding cast, with James Drury as the lead along with Lee J.Cobb, Doug McClure,
Gary Clarke and Roberta Shore, the show also attracted a host of A-list guest stars
including George C.Scott, Lee Marvin, Bette Davis, Robert Duvall and Ricardo
Montalban.
With its sensational storytelling, hard-hitting issues and outstanding performances, The
Virginian stands as a monument to the great American Western.
Special features: exclusive interviews with – James Drury (The Virginian), Gary
Clarke (Steve Hill), Roberta Shore (Betsy), Robert Fuller and Peter Brown
