Blockbuster, the video rental store chain founded in 1985, has formally filed for bankruptcy protection, a move widely anticipated by financial analysts. Once seemingly impervious to competition, Blockbuster has seen its business damaged by mail order DVD company Netflix as well as the proliferation of DVD rental machines located in supermarkets and other retail chains.
