LOOK UP! LOOK DOWN! LOOK OUT! CINEMA RETRO CO-HOSTS THE BIGGEST BOND MOVIE EVENT OF THEM ALL

On Sunday 20th November 2006, film composer David Arnold presented world-famous lyricist Don Black with the Cinema Retro Award for Outstanding Services to the Motion Picture Industry. Held at the Cine Lumiere theatre in London, this was part of a special 40th Anniversary screening of the James Bond film Thunderball, which features Don’s immortal lyrics in the title song performed by Tom Jones. The full nine-hour event, which was approved by Eon Productions, the James Bond film- makers, included on-screen documentaries, prize-giveaways and interviews with past cast and crew. Sir Christopher Frayling, Rector of the Royal College of Art, interviewed legendary production designer Sir Ken Adam, and Cinema Retro’s Lee Pfeiffer hosted interviews with producer Euan Lloyd (who knew Cubby Broccoli), Peter Janson-Smith (Ian Fleming’s literary agent), Justin Llewelyn (actor Desmond’s son), Harry Saltzman’s son Steven, and his PA Sue St. John. Gareth Owen of Bondstars.com helmed an on-stage discussion with actors Mollie Peters, Martine Beswicke, George Leech and Earl Cameron, as well as art director Peter Murton. The James Bond web site mi6.co.uk co-produced the event with Cinema Retro and Bondstars, and also organised the sponsorship and prize giveaways. Attended by over 175 people, the champagne reception was hosted by Taittinger in the foyer of the theatre that was decorated with Thunderball posters and memorabilia. Guests went away with a goody bag containing autographed photos of the stars, a signed first edition book The Art of Ken Adam, promotional material and even a Sean Connery 12” figure worth in excess of £40 alone.
